Scotland's crude birth rate was 10.1 per thousand population in 2016. The other figures given on this page are for 2015, because that is the latest year for which the statistics given below are readily available for a wide range of European countries.
The Scottish birth rate is lower than those of other parts of the UK: in 2015, Scotland's rate was 10.3, England's 12.1, Wales 10.7 and Northern Ireland's 13.1.
The chart shows the value of the total fertility rate for a wide range of European countries. In 2015, Scotland's total fertility rate (1.56) was higher than some of the other countries covered, such as Germany (1.50), Italy (1.35) and Spain (1.33). However, Scotlands total fertility rate was below that of the UK as a whole (1.80), the European Union (EU28) as a whole (1.58) and other European countries, such as France (1.96), Sweden (1.85) and Iceland (1.80).
