Population and Household Projections for Scotland's Strategic Development Planning Areas (2006-based)

4. Age structure

4.1 A summary of projected populations by broad age group is given in Tables 2a to 2d and projected populations by sex and five year age groups is given in Tables 3a to 3d. These tables, along with Figure 2 and Figure 3, show that the age structure of all SDP areas is projected to change markedly between 2006 and 2031.

4.2 The chart in Figure 2 shows that, in all SDP areas, the population is ageing. In particular, there are substantial projected increases in the very oldest age groups. By 2031 approximately two per cent of the population are projected to be aged 90 or older in all SDP areas, and the majority of the people in this age group will be female.

4.3 Figure 3 shows that in the 75+ age group, Aberdeen City & Shire SDP area has by far the largest projected increase of 114 per cent. SESplan SDP area is projected to have small increases in population for younger age groups whereas the other three SDP areas are all projected to have decreases in these younger age groups.

Please note that scales on the x-axis vary between SDP areas.
