The statistics in this publication are for flow-based migration estimates for the year ending 30 June (mid-year) which show people moving to or from an area.
Main Points
- Net migration into Scotland in the year to mid-2025 was lower than in recent years, with around 17,900 more people moving to Scotland than leaving.
- Total migration into Scotland is a combination of international migration and migration from other parts of the UK.
- International net migration has decreased from +33,200 people in the year to mid-2024 to +9,300 people in the year to mid-2025. This is the lowest it has been since mid-2020.
- Net migration from other parts of the UK has also decreased in the year to mid-2025 (+8,600) compared to the previous year (+13,800). Average rest of the UK migration has been fairly stable over the last decade, averaging around +10,000 people.
- Estimates for mid-2023 and mid-2024 have been revised to take into account the latest long-term international migration figures. Provisionally published figures estimated net international migration for the year to mid-2023 as +63,500 people and for the year to mid-2024 as +42,600; this has now been revised to +69,400 people and +33,200 people, respectively.
