NRS is responsible for registering key life events in Scotland, including births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. NRS maintains and updates these registers.
Most of the information NRS collects is provided to a registrar by the person registering the event. Who can register an event depends on the type of event being registered (for example, a birth, death or marriage or civil partnership).
More information about who can register each type of event is available on the Registration pages of the NRS website.
The information collected varies depending on the event. Full details are set out on the relevant event pages. In general, the information recorded may include:
the date the event occurred and the date it was registered
the place where the event occurred and where it was registered
the person’s place of residence
the date of birth
parents’ details (such as dates of birth, place of residence, country of birth and occupation)
