Archives in Scotland can apply to become an accredited archive service.
This is through the UK Archive Service Accreditation scheme.
National Records of Scotland administers the scheme in Scotland.
The National Archives coordinates the scheme across the UK. You can read more about the scheme and what is assessed on guidance from the National Archives.
Before you apply
Before applying you should contact us with an expression of interest.
Your expression of interest should include:
- the name of your service
- the name, email and phone number of the lead contact or contacts
- your first and second choice of panel dates

After you contact us
We’ll agree a timetable with you, based on:
- the next available application review period
- panel meeting dates
Starting an application
After we’ve agreed a timetable, you can start adding your application to the online system.
You should submit your application 3-4 months before your agreed panel date. Assessors start by reviewing documentation you’ve added to the online system. They may choose to include an in person visit to your archive service as part of the review process.
