Legal Search Room

The Legal Search Room is located on the first floor of General Register House.  You should use this search room if your research is for a legal or commercial purpose.

Records deposited in the National Records of Scotland, but remaining the property of private individuals or organisations, may not be consulted for legal or commercial purposes without the express written permission of the owner(s). Such records may include, but are not limited to, those beginning with the reference letters GD.

Opening Times

From 09:00 to 16:30 from Monday to Friday except for some public holidays and closures for essential maintenance.

Adoption Records

Adoption records are closed to general public access for 100 years and can only be consulted by appointment with the Adoption Unit.  Please go to our guidance on Adoption in the Registration area of this website and read our guide to Adoption Records before your visit.


A charge of £6.00 (for statutory registers) or £15.00 (for other records) is made for each record that you consult in the Legal Search Room with the exception of the adoption records. Please see our Copying Services guidance for further details.
