Assisted Search Service

Assisted Search Service

If you are pressed for time, a little unsure how to go about searching for records, or not very comfortable using computers, why not book an assisted search at the ScotlandsPeople Centre?

A Family History Officer will sit with you for a maximum of one hour to demonstrate how the digital record system works and help you compile your family tree using mainly birth, death, marriage and census records.

Please be aware that our records are only complete from 1855 onwards, the year that civil registration started in Scotland, and for this reason we only offer the assisted search service where the first record searched is on or after 1855.

  • Assisted searches are available from Monday to Friday excluding certain public holidays.  They start at 10.00 or a later time that is convenient to you.  To make the most of your day in the ScotlandsPeople Centre it is advisable to arrive as early as possible.
  • The fee is £20.00 per hour plus the cost of a day pass (currently £15.00).  To get maximum value from the session you are expected to have basic computer skills to enable you to continue your research after it has ended.

Please complete the assisted search service form so that we can assess if our service is suitable for you. You can nominate your preferred time and date but please note that we require at least five working days notice prior to your visit.

We will contact you by email or letter to confirm the time and date of your assisted search or to explain why we are unable to accept your application. If you have not received a reply from us at least 24 hours before your intended visit please call us on 0131 314 4300 (international +44).

You should be aware that a Family History Officer is a member of staff who is familiar with records held in the ScotlandsPeople Centre and is not a professional genealogist.
