2001 Census Ethnicity Report - Report on Coding of Other Ethnic Group

3. Tick and Text Data (T&T)

Some clue as to what the form-filler entered on the form may be given by the labels for the detailed codes in Appendix B. Because only a full Census could provide a full range of responses, these pre-determined codes did not fully accord with information form-fillers actually provided. To examine in detail what form-fillers actually ticked and wrote on the form, we need to look at ancillary information recorded in a special ‘Tick and Text’ (T&T) database during the process of data capture. In particular, for the question on ethnicity, the database records the presence or otherwise of a tick in each of the 14 tick boxes and any text captured in the 5 write-in boxes.

T&T data was captured for 8,885 of those coded as being of ‘Other ethnic group’. The number for each detailed ethnic code is shown in the column in Appendix C headed ‘In Tick and Text database’. The shortfall of 686 is largely explained by the One Number Census (ONC) process which added records to the database to account for under-enumeration and for which no T&T data was generated. The ONC added 626 persons to ‘Other ethnic group’. The remaining 60 are likely to be caused by corrections to form identification numbers being made to the main database without corresponding changes to the T&T data, thus preventing the T&T data being retrieved alongside the main data records.

Table 2 shows combinations of T&T used. The table shows that, for 376 persons, there was no box ticked or text written-in on the form. The ethnicity of such people would have been imputed as part of the process of edit and imputation. Imputation was done by finding donor records that matched on variables such as Country of Birth, Age, Marital Status, Religion and the Ethnic Group of other household members.

There were some 189 cases where no text was provided but the tick box in Section E was ticked.  There were also 120 persons with no text but more than one box ticked – in almost all cases the boxes included the one in Section E.
