Key Findings:
- The average household size in Scotland has decreased in the last 20 years. City of Edinburgh and Glasgow City are the exceptions and have increased since 2008.
- The number of households in Scotland continued to increase in 2021, reaching 2.53 million.
- The number of households increased in every council area over the last 20 years.
- There were 2.67 million dwellings in Scotland in 2021. Of these, 88,300 dwellings (3%) were vacant and 24,000 (1%) were second homes.
- Remote rural areas have a higher percentage of empty and second homes than urban areas.
