Boys' names

For the third year in a row Jack was the favourite name for boys and, also for the third consecutive year, Lewis was second (Table 1). There were two new entries in the top ten, Dylan, up 12 places to eighth, and Ross, up 2 places to ninth. Other names in the top fifty that have moved up noticeably were Aidan (up 11 places to 25th equal), William (up 10 places to 32nd equal) and Ethan (up 16 places to 45th equal). A notable name dropping out of the top hundred in 2001 was Alan. By early December, just over 25,000 boys had been registered, with over 1,900 different first names being used. The top 50 names accounted for just under 60 per cent of the total; and almost 1,200 boys were given unique (for 2001) first names.
