The UK Population Projections

The UK Population Projections

28 November 2005

Chris Shaw, Government Actuary's Department (GAD)

Since 1954, the Government Actuary's Department (GAD) in consultation with the Registrars General, has been responsible for the production of the official national population projections for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries. However, in 2006, responsibility will transfer from GAD to the Office for National Statistics.

National projections are normally produced every two years. The latest (2004-based) projections were published on 20 October. This presentation described the process for producing the projections and deciding the assumptions which underlie them. The headline assumptions regarding fertility, mortality and migration were discussed along with the key results from the new projections. Current issues in projection making were summarised with ideas for future developments.
