Population by Country of Birth and Nationality

Population by Country of Birth and Nationality

Estimates of the Scottish population by Country of Birth and Nationality from the Annual Population Survey (APS).

Notice 27 October 2022: The next release for population by country of birth and nationality estimates for the year ending June 2022, scheduled for November 2022, will not go ahead. This is due to an underlying data issue with one of the data sources feeding into these estimates. Previous releases are not affected by this issue.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) are transforming the way they produce population and migration statistics to make best use of all available data. As part of this transformation journey, they are reviewing the best methods to produce estimates of the population of the UK by country of birth and nationality. Therefore, the population by country of birth and nationality series using the Annual Population Survey (APS), which has been the main data source for these estimates in the past, will be discontinued. ONS are currently working on alternative approaches, including the use of administrative data to replace these APS estimates.

More information on this, as well as future plans for these estimates, can be found on the ONS website.

ONS are also inviting users to provide feedback on:
•    population estimates by country of birth and nationality needed in the interim;
•    your needs in the longer term; and
•    your needs on the timeliness of these estimates.

Please get in touch with ONS directly by emailing [email protected].
