Next update: 25 April 2024
Frequency: Monthly

Monthly analysis of deaths registered in Scotland, including breakdowns by cause of death, sex and area. Includes number of deaths, expected deaths and excess deaths.

Changes to methodology for excess deaths
The methodology used to calculate excess deaths changed in February 2024. More information on these changes, including figures comparing the old and new methods, can be found on the ONS website.

As a result of the methodology changes, we are no longer producing as many breakdowns of excess deaths as we previously did. The number of monthly mortality tables have been reduced and we will no longer produce a monthly report with these statistics. Detailed deaths data continues to be published in our weekly deaths and quarterly vital events publications.
