Changes to methodology for excess deaths

The methodology used to calculate excess deaths changed in February 2024. More information on these changes, including figures comparing the old and new methods, can be found on the ONS website.

Key points in this week’s update

  • The provisional total number of deaths registered in Scotland in week 29 of 2024 (15th July to 19th July) was 1,095. This is 94 or 7.9% lower than the expected number of deaths in week 29. There were 50 deaths that mentioned COVID-19.
  • There were 4,510 deaths registered in June 2024. This was 467 or 9.4% lower than the expected number of deaths in June.

It has been renamed to better reflect the fact that it includes data on all deaths, plus breakdowns for some key causes.  A breakdown of deaths involving coronavirus  is still included in this publication.
